Abstract

This study examined radio advocacy and voter registration apathy among residents of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State. It assessed the extent to which radio advocacy raises awareness of voter registration, examined its influence on residents' attitudes towards voter registration, identified the factors responsible for voter registration apathy, determined residents' exposure to radio voter education programmes, and suggested strategies to improve the effectiveness of radio advocacy. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The study population comprised 367, 367,158 residents, and a sample size of 384 respondents was determined using the standard Cochran formula. A structured questionnaire served as the instrument for data collection, and 330 completed copies were retrieved and analysed using frequency tables and percentages. The findings revealed that radio advocacy has significantly increased awareness of voter registration and positively influenced residents' attitudes towards participating in the registration process. The study also found that, despite sustained radio sensitisation, voter registration apathy persists due to factors such as political distrust, lack of interest in politics, inadequate knowledge of registration procedures, and challenges associated with registration centres. Furthermore, the findings showed that residents are regularly exposed to voter education messages through radio and regard the medium as a reliable source of electoral information. The study concluded that, while radio advocacy remains an effective tool for voter education and mobilisation, it cannot independently eliminate voter registration apathy without addressing underlying political and structural barriers. The study therefore recommended that radio stations increase the frequency of voter education programmes, broadcast messages in local languages, promote interactive programmes, and strengthen collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and community stakeholders to improve voter registration participation.
